LWV’s advocacy is centered on empowering voters and ensuring fair, accessible, and representative democracy. Key priorities include:
Expanding Voter Access
We fight to increase voters’ access to the polls, including expanding early voting and automatic and online voter registration.
Measures Supported by LWV
- Automatic voter registration
- Online voter registration
- Multilingual voting resources
- Extended polling hours
- Mail-in voting
- Early voting
- Eliminated ballot notary and witness signature requirements
- Extended registration deadlines
- Expanded polling locations
- Eliminated or relaxed ID requirements
- Added protections for in-person voting
Redistricting
Redistricting, or community districting, is the process of creating representational district maps for states and local communities. By determining which neighborhoods are included in each mapped boundary, redistricting impacts how our communities are represented in the US and local government and determines how resources are distributed.
How We Fight For Fair Redistricting Maps
People Powered Fair Maps™
In 2019, we launched the People Powered Fair Maps™ (PPFM) program to advocate for the creation of equitable, accurate maps in all 50 states and DC and to educate about redistricting and increase public engagement in the 2021 map drawing process.
People Powered Fair Maps™ focuses on:
- Ensuring equity and transparency in the map-drawing process
- Advocating for independent redistricting commissions and the integrity of existing commissions
- Pushing for restoration of the Voting Rights Act of 1965
- Monitoring and protecting the “free and fair” clause in state constitutions
- Increasing education and public engagement in the community districting process
Money in Politics
We work to ensure that our government serves the people, not wealthy special interests, by promoting transparency, limiting SuperPACs, and eliminating dark money.
What We're Doing
Advocating for Financial Transparency and Ethics
The League works with coalition partners, grassroots organizers, and everyday Americans to promote policies that would make our campaign finance system more transparent and less entangled with dark money. These include bills like that would shine a light on the influence of money in elections and increase financial transparency.
Litigation and Advocacy
Leagues across the US are fighting cases and promoting legislation to oppose dark money and increase financial transparency in our elections.
Fighting Voter Suppression
We protect every American’s right to vote, challenging those who seek to restrict Black, brown, female, disabled, and other Americans from making their voices heard in our democracy.
What We're Doing
Legal Work
The League is at the forefront of the most important federal and state cases across the United States. Our legal team works tirelessly to oppose all forms of voter suppression, including:
- Discriminatory voter ID laws;
- Attacks on voter registration;
- Last-minute Election Day barriers;
- The elimination of voting locations in underserved communities;
- Unjust voter purges; and
- Attempts to limit access to early and mail-in voting.
Advocating to End Voter Suppression
We support legislation that empowers Americans to participate in the voting process.
